The World Athletics Championships return to Tokyo
The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WCH Tokyo 25) kicked off this week at the Japan National Stadium - and it has already made global headlines. The biggest headlines so far saw history-maker pole vaulter Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis who leapt to his 14th world record, winning a third consecutive world title, and becoming the first human to clear the 6.30m barrier.
Kenyon runner Faith Kipyegon also raced to a fourth world 1500m title, New Zealand's Olympic champion Hamish Kerr soared to high jump gold, Canada's Ethan Katzberg broke the hammer throw world record, and the USA’s Cordell Tinch won the 110m hurdles gold. The home nation, Japan, has also been in the medals with Hayato Katsuki claiming a podium place in the 35km race walk on day one.
With many events and much more excitement still to come, the remainder of the Tokyo championships are sure to be a huge success. Athletes from around the world have gathered in Japan over the last few weeks in preparation for this extraordinary nine-day event, which runs until Sunday 21 September.

The championships are hugely significant for Japan after the last Olympics due to take place in the country unfolded behind closed doors due to the global pandemic. The president of Japan Athletics Yuko Arimori, a former marathon runner, said the championships return to Tokyo was about more than just sporting success.
He said: "Sport isn't just about the athletes but about everyone getting energy from it and lifting each other up, and I think that kind of energy is important," she said.
"I think this event will help us wipe away the emotions we felt back then and remind us what sport should be like. Athletics is the mother of sports and I want people to take inspiration from it."
So far, despite temperatures of more than 30C with 90% humidity in Tokyo, the championships have been an overwhelming success. Day one already saw records broken with more than 500,000 tickets sold and an incredible aerial display by the renowned Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s fighter jet team, Blue Impulse, above the Japan National Stadium to mark this historic occasion. With the following days also setting attendance records, the championships have been great news for Japan and the world. You can keep up with the latest results here.
