Main Story

JR Central has unveiled a new way to experience Japan's famous bullet trains with the launch of the Tokaido Lumière Express, a special overnight Shinkansen service operating on August 8–9, 2026.

Departing Tokyo Station at 10pm, the train will briefly stop at Shinagawa at 10:07pm and Shin-Yokohama at 10:18pm before arriving in Kyoto at 6:44am and Shin-Osaka at 6:59am the following morning.

Unlike a conventional overnight train, however, the Lumière Express will not travel continuously through the night.

Instead, after reaching Gifu-Hashima Station around midnight, the train will remain there for approximately six hours while overnight maintenance takes place across the Tokaido Shinkansen network. Shortly before dawn, it will resume its journey, allowing passengers to arrive in Kansai before the first regular morning Shinkansen departing Tokyo.

The service will operate using an N700S configured with Ordinary Class, Green Car, and women-only car. To make the overnight journey more comfortable, JR Central has reduced the number of passengers onboard compared with a typical service, giving travelers more personal space.

However, there are no sleeping cars or private compartments, the interior lights remain on throughout the night, and onboard sales of food and drinks will not be available. Passengers can, however, step onto the platform during designated periods and use station vending machines.

JR Central has also advised passengers that nearby maintenance work may generate noise or vibration.

The goal here isn't to recreate Japan's classic sleeper trains, but to offer a new style of travel that helps passengers make better use of their time. By arriving early in the morning, travelers can begin sightseeing, attend events, or start a business trip without needing to book a hotel the night before.

Why This News Matters for Travelers

Although the Lumière Express is currently planned as a one-time service, it offers an intriguing glimpse into how overnight travel on the Shinkansen could evolve. Rather than simply providing a place to sleep, it combines overnight accommodation and transportation into a single journey, allowing passengers to arrive in Kyoto or Osaka early enough to begin sightseeing, attend an event, or start a business trip almost immediately.

At the same time, the experience is unlike anything else on Japan's high-speed rail network. Instead of speeding directly to its destination, the train pauses overnight at Gifu-Hashima while maintenance takes place across the Tokaido Shinkansen. The result is a journey that reimagines how travelers can make better use of both time and money.

What Comes Next

Reservations for the Tokaido Lumière Express are scheduled to open on July 3, 2026, through the official JR Central Tours website. Unlike regular Tokaido Shinkansen services, the Lumière Express is being sold as a travel package rather than a standard rail ticket.

At present, JR Central has announced the Lumière Express as a one-night-only service operating on August 8–9, 2026.

Practical Tips for Visiting

  • Use a JR Pass or regional rail pass: If you're planning to continue beyond Kyoto or Shin-Osaka after riding the Lumière Express, a JR Pass or regional rail pass may help reduce the cost of onward travel. Which option offers the best value depends on the length and scope of your itinerary.

  • Stay nearby before departure: Because the Lumière Express departs Tokyo Station at 10:00pm, staying at a hotel near Tokyo Station, Shinagawa or Shin-Yokohama can make for a more relaxed start to the journey. You can browse hotels through JapanDen before departure or for the next stage of your trip in Kyoto or Osaka.

  • Stay connected: A Pocket Wi-Fi device or eSIM makes it easier to check train schedules, navigate Kyoto and Osaka after your early morning arrival, and manage any onward travel plans.

  • Arriving from overseas: If you're flying into Tokyo before boarding the Lumière Express, Haneda Airport offers convenient rail access to Tokyo Station. Travelers unfamiliar with Japan's transport system may also wish to consider a Meet & Greet service to make airport transfers and connections easier.

A New Approach to Overnight Rail

Japan's classic sleeper trains have largely disappeared over the past two decades, with the Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo now the country's only regularly scheduled overnight sleeper services.

Rather than attempting to recreate those trains, the Lumière Express points toward a different future for overnight rail.

If the trial proves successful, it could demonstrate that overnight travel doesn't necessarily require dedicated sleeper cars—just a different way of thinking about when passengers travel and that arriving at the right time can sometimes be just as valuable as arriving as quickly as possible.

Q: Which stations can passengers board and leave the train?

A: Passengers can board at Tokyo, Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama, and disembark at Kyoto or Shin-Osaka. Boarding and alighting are not available at intermediate stations.
