Pocket WiFi Guide for Japan

Intro

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, your smart device is a gateway to live travel updates, language tips, translation tools, and much more, making it easier than ever to explore Japan like a pro. Of course, in order to access these amazing apps you’ll need a safe and reliable WiFi connection while you’re on the move. The solution is a Pocket Wifi device. In our quick start guide, we’ll explain what these ingenious devices are, how they work, the main benefits of using Pocket WiFi while travelling in Japan, how to order a portable router, where to pick it up from, and much more, so you can get connected and start exploring.

What is a Pocket WiFi device?

A Pocket WiFi device is a portable router that allows you to connect to the internet wherever you are and whenever you need it. This small, handheld device generates a safe and reliable, high-speed WiFi connection for your phone, laptop, tablet, or smart watch, allowing you to access the internet while you’re travelling - it even works on Japan’s trains and public transport. Pocket WiFi devices allow you to:

  • Receive live travel updates

  • Check timetables on the go

  • Navigate with Google Maps

  • Use Google Translate for language tips (the camera function can even help you instantly translate signs and even menus!)

  • Access social media

  • Keep in touch with friends and family

Key Features

  • Unlimited data

  • Up to five devices can connect simultaneously

  • You can share your connection with your companions if you’re travelling in a group

  • Great savings compared to roaming

  • Insurance is included and no hidden fees

  • Easy to pick up on arrival at Japan’s airports and return on departure

  • Devices are small, lightweight, modern, easy-to-use, and have a long lasting battery life

Why Do I Need a Mobile WiFi Router in Japan?

While Japan has free WiFi hotspots in public places, only 10% of those available are actually free, while others require a Japanese email address to register. Meanwhile, if you try to rely on your existing phone and mobile network, you run the risk of huge roaming charges and using all of your data.

Renting a Pocket WiFi device is a much better option, offering far lower costs, while also being an easier and more flexible solution than other alternatives such as buying a prepaid Japanese SIM card to put in your device. With a PocketWiFi device all you need to do is carry the device with you and you’ll be able to stay connected throughout your stay in Japan.

How does it work?

Pocket WiFi devices utilise the main local cellular network in Japan - Softbank LTE, which covers 99% percent of Japan's population and is constantly being expanded. As such, coverage is extensive, reliable, and offers fast speeds.

Mobile WiFi routers are also very easy to use. To get started, all you need to do is:

  1. Switch on the device

  2. Enter the password provided

  3. Start using the internet

That’s it!

Providers such as Ninja WiFi offer dedicated customer service support via call centre if you have any problems, although PocketWifi devices are known for their ease-of-use and reliability.

What is included?

Your PocketWiFi rental includes the following:

  • Super Fast 4G LTE

  • Maximum Download Speed: Max 150 Mbps

  • Maximum Upload speed: Max 50 Mbps

  • Simultaneous Connected: Up to 5 Devices

  • Continuous Use Time: Approximately 6 Hours

  • Data Usage: From 5GB per day to 10GB per day of high-speed data (depending on your plan)

  • Charging cable, instruction manual, storage pouch

  • Insurance is included, depending on the package you choose when ordering. You can also add insurance and a spare battery as an optional extra

Where can I get a Pocket WiFi rental?

We recommend Pocket WiFi devices from Ninja WiFi - a long-established and trusted provider of mobile routers based in Japan with the highest number of collection and drop-off points. They offer a number of rates and packages to suit your needs and it’s easy to book your rental online before you arrive. You can order a Pocket WiFi device from Ninja WiFi in three easy steps:

  1. Apply for a device by registering and completing the application form.

  2. Once your order is confirmed by email, the next step is to pay for your rental. You need to book at least one full day before your preferred pick-up date.

  3. Finally, collect your rental using one of the methods below and start using your device throughout your stay in Japan. At the end of your trip, simply return the router from one of the collection points and return home with the memories of a lifetime.

Once your rental is confirmed and paid for, you will be able to collect your Pocket WiFi device on arrival at one of Japan’s main airports. The list includes:

  • Narita International Airport, Terminal 1

  • Narita International Airport, Terminal 2

  • Haneda Airport

  • Kansai International Airport

  • Chubu Centrair International

  • Fukuoka Airport

  • Niigata Airport

  • New Chitose Airport

  • Naha Airport

Alongside airport collection, you can also pick up your Pocket WiFi device via delivery (for a small fee) or from the Ninja WiFi branch in Shinjuku. Collection from the airport or Ninja WiFi counter is free and it’s absolutely fine to return your device at a different location than the one you picked it up from i.e. if you’re travelling home via a different airport.

Important Information

  • Pocket WiFi devices from Ninja WiFi must be ordered in advance - up to one day prior to your desired pick-up date. This can be up to four days in advance however, depending on the location you intend to collect your device, so be sure to check beforehand.

  • Insurance is optional, but if purchased this can cover the loss, theft, or damage of any device, without any cost to you.

  • If you accidentally take the device home, it can be easily returned via a dedicated service.

  • Pocket WiFi routers work with any WiFi capable device and will provide coverage even on trains

  • Devices can be ordered as a part of a package with your accommodation and transport passes (such as the Japan Rail Pass). Contact us here at JapanDen for more information.
